Our History

Our Story – CIELO Hammocks
From the dream that everyone should sleep in a hammock to an enterprise at the heart of Yucatán
My name is Constantino Urzaiz, a lifelong hammock enthusiast. I grew up sleeping in one and never wanted to go back to a bed.
In 2001, while living in Pensacola, Florida and missing the comfort of my hammock, I realized that everyone should experience the benefits and pleasure of sleeping in one. I asked my mother to send me 10 cotton hammocks. She knew the best ones came from Chumayel and Teabo. They sold out in less than an hour. That moment marked the beginning of CIELO.
With each new batch, I attended weekend markets and soon earned a reputation for the quality of our hammocks. Our first website opened doors in the United States, and shortly after, I returned to Mérida to open our first office and warehouse on Calle 65.

Reinventing tradition with unique materials
Over time, I realized that most hammocks on the market were very similar. That’s when I discovered CIELO’s true mission: to create something different, unique, and of the highest quality.
This is how OSO® Cotton was born. Premium mercerized cotton that allowed us to weave the finest cotton hammock on the market. This innovation opened the doors to CIELO’s international expansion, now with distributors in more than 110 countries.
The DuraSun® Revolution
In 2014 we took another big step with the creation of the DuraSun® hammock: Soft as cotton, strong as marine rope, designed for outdoors, and with a lifespan of up to 10 years under sun and weather.
This development established us as leaders in the global hotel and resort market. In 2025, we installed 1,950 DuraSun® hammocks at Hotel Xcaret México II, a project that reflects our capacity for innovation and large-scale execution.

Creativity that inspires
Beyond raw materials, we believe in design as a driving force. We have created unique pieces such as the Hacienda Hammock, luxury daybeds, parasols, lamps, and rest nets.
We also explore decorative techniques such as knots and tapestries, always with the philosophy that every product must carry a seal of creativity and unmatched innovation.
Eliminating middlemen, empowering artisans
Historically, the hammock trade in Yucatán was dominated by resellers who bought hammocks from artisans at low prices and sold them in Mérida. This system never convinced me, since the true creators — the weavers — rarely received fair payment.
In 2016, we decided to change this model forever: we opened our own facilities in Teabo, Yucatán, where artisans could deliver their hammocks directly.
We eliminated middlemen, ensured fair and immediate payment, and built direct relationships that allow us to understand their needs and provide continuous training. Today, we are the only hammock brand with a permanent presence in the community, working hand in hand with the weavers.

Global presence
Our commitment to innovation and quality has allowed us to conquer international markets and receive important recognition.
We have participated in trade shows such as Spoga Gafa (Germany), New York Now (USA), and Surf Expo (Florida). Since 2022, we have promoted the Denomination of Origin of the Yucatecan Hammock, with the goal of protecting and adding value to this artisanal tradition.

Social impact that transforms lives
Our greatest pride is not only the hammocks we weave, but the lives we transform through them.
In 2012, my sister and co-founder Josefina created the CIELO Foundation, thanks to which we have provided scholarships to 26 women who are now nurses, teachers, and lawyers.
Today, more than 900 artisan families benefit from this fair and sustainable model. We are proud to be the first B Corporation in Mexico, the only hammock brand certified by the Fair Trade Federation, and ISO 9001 certified.
The Best is Yet to Come
At CIELO, we believe our story is just
beginning. With innovation, social impact, and passion for our culture, we continue building a future that is bright, fair, and sustainable.
Thank you for being part of it.
